Role Overview: Male House Parent

Reporting to the Village Matron, the Male House Parent will ensure the safety, welfare, and personal development of scholars residing in the village. This role requires fostering a warm, family-like atmosphere while serving as a vital liaison between parents, academic staff, and the house community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Embody and promote the Pestalozzi ethos and house guidelines to provide positive, student-centred pastoral care.
  • Maintain high standards of welfare and safeguard children by strictly adhering to the Child Protection Policy.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding their child’s progress, welfare, and any significant incidents.
  • Manage house administration, maintenance, and upkeep in collaboration with relevant staff.
  • Take responsibility for shared village facilities such as catering, procurement, security, and study preparation.
  • Reside within the village during duty hours to oversee scholars’ wellbeing and personal growth.
  • Work closely with the Pastoral Officer to address psychosocial challenges such as homesickness, loneliness, and bullying.
  • Liaise with the Nurse to manage medical needs and promote healthy lifestyles, including administering medication when required.
  • Apply disciplinary policies fairly, encouraging scholars to take responsibility for their actions.
  • Lead and support extracurricular activities and skills lessons, ensuring active student participation.
  • Maintain detailed records of scholars’ progress, welfare, health, and behaviour, providing termly reports.
  • Ensure proper care and secure storage of children’s personal belongings and respect for village property.
  • Conduct daily security and hygiene checks, ensuring the village is safe and clean at all times.
  • Prepare the house for new scholars at the beginning and end of each academic year, including cleaning and maintenance duties.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate is required.
  • Proven experience in children’s residential care is essential.
  • Diploma-level qualification preferred, ideally in Social Work, Education, Nursing, or Child Development.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Genuine love and interest in working with children.
  • Strong understanding of child development principles.
  • Patience, tolerance, and ability to manage limited personal time and space.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work within a diverse community.
  • Proficient English language skills.
  • Practical skills such as sewing, knitting, or gardening are advantageous.
  • Strong administration and organizational skills.
  • First Aid qualification and knowledge of common childhood illnesses.
