Job description

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems Supervisor plays a critical role in ensuring UAV operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations. This includes preparing equipment and personnel, overseeing mission planning, and providing a clear understanding of all operational tasks. The role also oversees the processing, analysis, and presentation of data such as aerial photography, videography, photogrammetry, LiDAR, thermal imagery, and GNSS survey data.

Key Accountabilities

Coordinate UAV operations, including flight planning, equipment maintenance, regulatory compliance, and use of UAV data for operational insights.
Maintain records to demonstrate adherence to safety rules and regulations. Ensure necessary UAS firmware updates are done to address security vulnerabilities, improve performance, and ensure compliance with regulations as per operations manual.
Organise and analyse flight data using clear naming conventions, structured file systems, and data processing tools to ensure data accessibility and accuracy.
Oversee UAV preparedness for emergency response, including training, equipment readiness, protocols, and communication procedures.
Liaise with various departments to identify operational needs, potential use cases, and opportunities for drone deployment across the business.
Conduct regular reviews and assessments of departmental UAV use cases to evaluate effectiveness and relevance.
Develop and maintain an annual UAV operational schedule in alignment with organisational priorities, regulatory constraints, and resource availability.
Monitor the efficiency and utilisation of drone assets and propose strategies for improved coordination and productivity.
Evaluate and select appropriate post-flight data processing tools (e.g., photogrammetry software, LiDAR processing tools, thermal analysis platforms) to ensure efficient data interpretation.
Process UAV-acquired data into usable formats such as maps, 3D models, thermal overlays, and inspection reports.
Ensure all required certifications and licenses (e.g., RPAS Operating Certificate, Remote Pilot License) are valid. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of ZCARs Part 18.
Ensure safe and responsible UAV operations, minimising risks to people, property, and the environment. This involves establishing clear safety protocols, training operators, implementing flight plans, and complying with regulations, in line with the CEC SHE management process.
Proficiency in radio communication protocols and procedures for coordinating with ground crews, air traffic control, and other stakeholders during flight operations, ensuring clear and effective communication.

To be successful in this role, you will be required to have:

Full grade twelve (G12) certificate.
Advanced Diploma/degree in any Science, or equivalent.
Valid Remote Pilot License from the ZCAA (BVLOS rating would be an added advantage).
Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety.
Understanding of photogrammetry principles and the software processes/applications involved, in order to provide survey grade data to our clients.
Preparation of drone and survey-related Method Statements and Risk Assessments.
Flight planning, meteorology, system preparation and airspace management in compliance with ZCAA regulations and company protocol.
Power utility UAV operations experience.
Familiar with programming languages used in UAV development, e.g. Python and C++.
Understanding of aviation principles, airspace regulations, and UAV technology.
Computer skills.
Data management skills.
