Tender Notice: Solar-Powered Irrigation Garden Development – Kasisi, Chongwe

Website People's Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia

1.0 BACKGROUND

The People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia together with Zambia Homeless and Poor People’s Federation (ZHPPF), is implementing a climate-resilient agricultural initiative to strengthen food and income security among marginalized communities in Chongwe and Lusaka Districts. The initiative involves the establishment of a solar-powered irrigation facility on 5 hectares of community-owned land in Kasisi. The project will support agroecological food production, training in sustainable agriculture, and the generation of income through the sale of high-value crops, local vegetables, and fruit trees. The farm will also act as a training centre for underserved communities.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

To construct, and operationalize a fully functional, community-managed irrigation and training facility, with all necessary infrastructure, including a hybrid-powered borehole, drip irrigation system, water storage, shade-net greenhouse, fencing, and capacity-building for local farmers.

3.0 SCOPE OF WORK

a) Land Use Plan (Farm Layout)

Total Area: 5 Hectares, subdivided as follows:

1 Hectare: ~400 Hass avocado trees + fruit tree nursery
0.25 Hectares (50m x 50m): High-value crops (red/yellow bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, English cucumbers) under shade net structure
1 Hectare: Local vegetables (Lumanda, Chibwabwa, rape, onions)

b) Water Source Development

Hydrogeological survey to determine groundwater yield and drilling site
Drill 1 commercial borehole to 100m
Install a 5 HP submersible hybrid pump (solar + electricity)
Solar array: Minimum of 10 panels (300–550W each)
Construct secure pump house with electrical control panel and safety features

c) Water Storage & Distribution

Install two (2) 10,000-litre water tanks on 6 meters elevated steel stands
Lay out mainline pipes from borehole to tanks and irrigation zones using HDPE PN10 pipes
Include ball valves, air-release valves, and pipe junctions for zoned distribution

d) Drip Irrigation System

Install a zoned drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation system with the following specifications:

Drip Lines:

16–20mm UV-stabilized polyethylene tubing
2L/h emitters at 30–50cm spacing
Single line per tree row for avocado orchard

Microjet-sprinklers

30–60L/h for nursery and establishing trees

Mainlines & Sub-mains:

HDPE pipes (50–75mm)

Filters & Valves:

Disc filters (minimum 120 mesh), gate valves, and fertigation injectors

Total Coverage:

8,500 meters of drip line across orchard, greenhouse, and open field

Training:

System operation, maintenance, pressure testing, emitter flushing, filter cleaning

e) Shade Net Greenhouse Installation (50m x 50m)

Construct a 2.5m–3m high structure with:

Galvanized steel poles or pressure-treated wood
50%–60% UV-resistant shade netting
Netting secured using clips and tension wires
Ground-level piping and micro-drip lines for irrigation
Include ventilation gaps, access gates, and a secure perimeter

f) Fencing

Fence entire 5-hectare perimeter (approx. 1200m) using high-tensile game wire fencing
Include treated wooden or steel corner posts, with intermediate posts at 2.5m intervals
Install lockable access gate

g) Training and Capacity Building

Conduct hands-on training workshop on:
Irrigation system operation and maintenance
Distribute simplified user manuals and visual guides

h) Monitoring, Documentation, and Handover

Weekly implementation reports with site photos and timelines
Final project report including:
a) As-built irrigation and electrical diagrams
b) Training attendance and evaluation summaries
c) Maintenance guide and sustainability recommendations
