About the Role – Technical Coach Jobs in Solwezi

As a Technical Coach, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the skills and capabilities of boilermakers, welders, artisans, and technicians within our engineering department. Your responsibilities will include delivering hands-on coaching, developing training materials, and conducting structured sessions to close identified skills gaps. You will champion quality and safety standards, provide technical oversight on-site, and foster a continuous learning environment aligned with First Quantum’s operational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, environmental, quality, and company policies and procedures.
  • Deliver on-the-job coaching and formal training in collaboration with the KMP Training Department.
  • Prepare and implement training materials tailored to operational needs.
  • Lead technical fault diagnosis and corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Engage learners through effective communication, assessments, and performance monitoring using the Proficiency Framework.
  • Identify and support high-potential artisans for career progression.
  • Maintain accurate records of coaching interventions and training outcomes via learning management systems.
  • Promote a coaching culture by collaborating with supervisors, HR, and senior leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 (G12) school certificate.
  • Craft Certificate in Boilermaking or Welding.
  • Advanced Welding Certification (Coded Welding to AWS/ASME/API standards).
  • Advanced Plating and Layout Certification.
  • Membership in the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrable coaching experience or formal coaching certification.
  • At least 10 years of welding and fabrication experience in fixed plant maintenance within mineral processing, including 3–5 years in a supervisory role; smelter experience is advantageous.

Technical Expertise and Tools

  • Proficiency in advanced welding techniques: MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and Stick (SMAW).
  • Experience with CNC plate cutting, forming machines, and specialized metal fabrication equipment such as plasma cutters, guillotines, and plate bending machines.
  • Strong knowledge of metal properties including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper, and their behavior during welding.
  • Expertise in interpreting complex engineering drawings, isometric sketches, P&IDs, and welding symbols.
  • Technical troubleshooting skills for complex metalwork repairs.
  • Familiarity with reliability maintenance processes and KPIs such as RCA, MTBF, MTTR, and FMECA.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (e.g., PRONTO) and learning management systems (LMS).
  • Proficient in MS Office applications with a willingness to adopt new software tools.
