Seed Maize Specialist

Job description

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Seed Maize Specialist. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in agronomy, phenotyping, and seed technology, with a focus on maize. This role involves overseeing the development, production, and quality control of maize seeds. The successful candidate will be responsible for embedding appropriate planning, multiplication, processing and testing protocols and procedures that lead to line maintenance seed that meets quality, quantity and timeline product specifications.

JOB DESCRIPTION

* Oversee the production process of maize seeds, ensuring adherence to quality standards and best practices.

* Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure the purity and viability of maize seeds.

* Design and manage field trials to test new maize seed varieties under different environmental conditions.

* To multiply and manage seed varieties so as to maintain the true type characteristics.

* Maintain an accurate inventory of all high-class seeds and ensure that they remain viable at all times.

* Carry out various crop agronomic trials in order to come up with best practices that will result in production of high-quality seed.

* Manage all pre and post control plots as well as accurate data collection.

* Contracting out-growers for the multiplication of high-class seeds.

* Analyze data from field trials and research studies to inform breeding programs and production strategies

* Provide technical support and training to farmers and distributors on the best practices for maize cultivation and seed usage.

* Ensure all seed production and distribution activities comply with local and international agricultural regulations.

* Conduct market analysis to identify trends and opportunities in the maize seed industry.

* Prepare detailed reports and presentations on research findings, production outcomes, and market trends for stakeholders

* Submission of application to SCCI for DUS, NVRT as well as to VRC for variety release.

* Support commercial team with product knowledge and demand generation.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

1. Experience – 5 years plus

2. Qualifications – Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Seed Technology, or a related field.

3. Computer literacy – Competent with Software such as Excel, etc

4. Knowledge of Maize seed production – 3 to 5 Seasons in Seed Maize Production.

5. Ability to Work independently and as part of a team.

6. Conversant with Zambia process for seed variety Registration and Release.
