Reports to: Safety Manager
Site: Solwezi
JVChantete Earthworks Ltd is looking for a Safety Officer to support mining operations in Zambia. JVChantete is headquartered at Mindolo North in Kitwe and is driven by innovation, excellence, and a commitment to building thriving teams.
Key Responsibilities
The Safety Officer plays a critical role in maintaining a safe working environment.
- Develop and implement site-specific health and safety policies in line with company and legal standards.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and site inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Deliver safety training, inductions, and toolbox talks to staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Monitor the use of PPE and ensure compliance with safety protocols at all times.
- Investigate accidents and near-misses, preparing detailed reports with corrective action plans.
- Maintain and update safety records, inspection logs, and incident reports in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate emergency response drills and ensure readiness of fire safety and first-aid equipment.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and assist during audits, inspections, or compliance reviews.
- Promote a strong safety culture by engaging and educating staff on best practices.
Key Competencies
- Good communication skills.
- Certification and experience in First Aid are an added advantage.
- Must be alert and assertive, tactful and diplomatic.
- Must be ready to attend and/or conduct safety briefings every day.
- Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Time management and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Team collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
- Attention to detail.
- Continuous improvement mindset.
- Valid driver’s license.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate with five O-levels including Mathematics and English.
- Valid Silicosis certificate.
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a similar field, preferably in the mining industry.
