Job description

Job Summary:
The Local Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, promoting sustainable practices and monitoring the environmental impact of the organization’s activities. The role involves liaising with local authorities, conducting environmental assessments and implementing environmental management plans.

Key Responsibilities:

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the organization complies with local, national and international environmental regulations. Prepare and submit required environmental reports to relevant authorities.

Environmental Monitoring: Conduct regular environmental assessments and audits to monitor the organization’s impact. Collect and analyse environmental data, including water, air, and soil quality.

Sustainability Initiatives: Develop and implement programs to reduce waste, conserve resources, and promote sustainable practices. Educate employees and stakeholders on environmental policies and practices.

Environmental Management Plans: Assist in developing and implementing Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Monitor the effectiveness of environmental management plans and recommend improvements.

Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders on environmental matters. Represent the organization in meetings with environmental regulators and advocacy groups.

Incident Response: Investigate and report on environmental incidents or complaints. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and prevent future incidents.

Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge of local environmental laws and regulations.
Experience in conducting environmental assessments and audits.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
Proficiency in using environmental monitoring tools and software.
Professional certification in environmental management or a related discipline.
Experience working with local communities on environmental initiatives.
