Job description

LIVESTOCK MANAGER

Our client, a farm in Mpongwe, is looking for a self-motivated and experienced Livestock Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of its beef cattle and feedlot operations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring efficient cattle management, feedlot profitability, animal health and husbandry, staff supervision, budgeting, reporting, and compliance with health and safety standards. The Manager will also be expected to identify innovative ways of improving livestock production and overall farm performance.

Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Management

Interacts with: Management and Employees

JOB DESCRIPTION

Administrative Duties

  • Plan and manage daily livestock operations and capital expenditure.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports on livestock performance, feedlot operations, animal health, and production.
  • Prepare and manage livestock operational budgets and monitor expenditure.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, hygiene, and farm standards.
  • Develop operational plans and production targets in consultation with the CEO and Management.
  • Maintain accurate livestock, production, and operational records.

Leadership and Management Duties

  • Supervise, motivate, and evaluate farm employees.
  • Allocate duties and ensure efficient completion of daily livestock activities.
  • Train and develop employees in proper cattle handling and livestock management practices.
  • Maintain discipline, teamwork, accountability, and productivity among farm staff.
  • Identify operational challenges and implement practical solutions.
  • Continuously seek innovative ways to improve livestock production and farm profitability.

Cattle and Feedlot Operations

  • Oversee the management of beef cattle, including feeding, health, handling, and general husbandry.
  • Manage feedlot operations and ensure cattle are properly fed, watered, handled, and monitored.
  • Monitor animal health, vaccination, disease prevention, and treatment programmes.
  • Monitor feed consumption, feed conversion, weight gain, and overall cattle performance.
  • Apply knowledge of animal nutrition and feed formulation to improve livestock performance and profitability.
  • Maintain accurate livestock and production records.
  • Ensure proper animal welfare and handling practices.
  • Coordinate with veterinary and agricultural service providers where necessary.
  • Identify opportunities to improve feedlot efficiency and profitability.

REQUIRED SKILLSET

  • Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience with a proven performance track record.
  • Education: Certificate, Diploma, or higher qualification in Animal Science, Livestock Production, Animal Husbandry, or a related field.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Good knowledge of beef cattle and feedlot management.
  • Knowledge of animal nutrition, animal health, and husbandry practices.
  • Knowledge of general farm operations and management.
  • Strong planning, budgeting, reporting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a farm environment.
