Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

To maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in patient areas while supporting clinical staff by assisting with non-medical patient needs such as bed preparation, meal service, and observation. The House Keeper plays a vital role in infection control and overall patient comfort and dignity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Environmental Cleaning & Disinfection

  • Mop and scrub walls and floors of wards, toilets, bathrooms, consultation rooms, offices, and treatment/dressing rooms, following WHO/MoH protocols.
  • Clean sinks, toilets, tables, lockers, windows, mirrors, door mats, and all high-touch surfaces in line with infection prevention guidelines.
  • Ensure all assigned areas are cleaned daily and properly handed over at the end of each shift. 2.

2. Patient Area Support

  • Make and prepare patient beds before and after surgeries or admissions.
  • Monitor patients and inform nursing staff promptly of any patient requiring urgent attention (e.g., discomfort, spills, bedpan needs).
  • Assist with serving patient meals, ensuring meals are distributed hygienically and patients receive assistance if needed.
  • Manage laundry, including collecting, sorting, and sending soiled linen and clothing for cleaning as per hospital procedures.

3. Scheduled Deep Cleaning

  • Conduct general monthly disinfection and deep cleaning across the facility.
  • Clean meeting rooms (3x/week) and hospital windows (monthly, with team).
  • Submit cleaning schedules and activity reports to the Supervisor for onward reporting to HR/Admin.

 4. Waste Management

  • Ensuring safe disposal of waste including medical materials and human tissue.
  • Follow all biomedical waste handling regulations.

5. Maintenance Reporting

  • Inspect facility areas regularly and record issues in the Maintenance Request Book.
  • Submit a monthly summary of maintenance reports and repairs to the Supervisor.
  • Ensure all check-lists and all SafeCare required documentation are being updated.

6. Equipment & Supply Care

  • Clean and store all cleaning tools (mops, brooms, cloths) properly after each use.
  • Safely store chemicals and cleaning supplies in designated lockable storage areas.

7. Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to all workplace safety guidelines and infection prevention protocols.
  • Monitor and restock hand sanitizer and soap at all hand hygiene stations.

8. Training and Communication

  • Attend regular trainings, team meetings, and refreshers related to housekeeping and patient area support.
  • Cooperate with nurses, patients, and support staff in a respectful and professional manner.

9. Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum: Secondary School Certificate.
  • Previous experience in hospital housekeeping or patient support roles is an added advantage.
  • Basic understanding of hygiene, safety, and patient dignity.
  • Physically fit and able to lift, bend, and be on feet for extended periods.
