Our client, Mighty Fin, a dynamic fintech company, is looking for a strategic and experienced Head of Credit & Risk to drive their credit risk management function and strengthen their credit governance framework.

About the Head of Credit and Risk Role in Lusaka

As the Head of Credit & Risk, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s credit and risk management strategies. You will lead the development and continuous enhancement of credit policies, lending frameworks, and governance standards while ensuring lending operations align with Mighty Fin’s risk appetite and business goals. This position demands a commercially astute leader capable of balancing sustainable portfolio growth with rigorous risk management within a fast-evolving fintech environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute credit and risk management strategies aligned with organisational objectives.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of credit policies, underwriting standards, and governance frameworks.
  • Oversee credit underwriting and approval processes to ensure responsible and consistent lending decisions.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, analyse risk exposure, and implement measures to enhance portfolio quality and reduce credit losses.
  • Establish portfolio monitoring tools, risk dashboards, and provide executive reporting on credit performance indicators.
  • Identify emerging credit risks and recommend proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Supervise credit analytics, risk modelling, and credit scoring methodologies to optimise lending decisions.
  • Collaborate with Collections, Finance, Operations, Compliance, and Technology teams to improve portfolio outcomes.
  • Chair or actively participate in Credit Committee meetings, delivering strategic insights to Executive Management.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and risk governance standards.
  • Support new product development by providing credit risk assessments for lending products and services.
  • Lead and mentor the Credit & Risk team, fostering a culture of accountability, integrity, and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and present portfolio performance reports, risk evaluations, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Banking, Economics, Business Administration, Risk Management, or related field.
  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ progressive experience in credit risk management, banking, microfinance, fintech lending, digital financial services, and portfolio risk management.
  • At least three (3) years in a leadership or management role.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the credit lifecycle including underwriting, portfolio management, collections, and recoveries.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing credit policies and governance frameworks.
  • Experience managing lending portfolios and monitoring key performance metrics.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • High integrity, accountability, and commercial acumen.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, or related discipline.
  • Professional certifications such as FRM, CFA, ACCA, CIMA, CRMP, or equivalents.
  • Experience in digital lending, embedded finance, or fintech environments.
  • Familiarity with credit scoring systems, predictive analytics, and alternative credit assessment models.
  • Experience serving on Credit or Risk Committees.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements governing lending institutions in Zambia.
