Job description

Nanga Farms Limited is a large, irrigated sugarcane estate situated 25Km Northeast of Mazabuka in the Southern Province of Zambia. The company is part of the ABF Sugar Group, and its main activities are the cultivation of 2,860 hectares of sugarcane and the rearing of 1,400 head of cattle. The Company now invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of:

Harvesting Supervisor- Agriculture x1 – Permanent

Permanent Role Reporting to – Workshop / Crop Removal Manager

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage all crop removal activities, timing and quality standards related the operation on the estate.

• Ensure all assets /equipment used for crop removal within the farm (which may include cane cutter barracks, Kitchen and Fire tender) are maintained within Illovo / Site Level standards.

• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders.

• Develop, implement and manage crop removal operation resource and activity plans

• Monitor crop removal budgets and implement cost reduction measures to ensure budget adherence

• Ensure adherence to harvesting schedule and crop estimate cadence, and accurate reports submitted on time.

• Secure materials and other crop removal operation inputs

• Ensure disciplinary codes are followed

• Ensure activity data is captured accurately and consistently updates and reconciled in Canepro.

• Ensure labour is recruited in line with plan and approve input data for monthly payroll

• Implement and monitor continuous improvement practices by driving work practices, and ensuring that tools and techniques are applied to deliver high quality, sustainable supply of estate sugar cane

• Conduct on the job training, coaching and instruction on various operations, and identify new training needs where appropriate

• Manage fire and security risks

• Develop and review SOPs as per risk assessment

• Promote and adhere to Illovo’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Health & Safety

• Ensure team members wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

• Monitor adherence to safety guidelines and report incidents or hazards immediately

• Conduct basic safety talks or briefings before work begins.

Performance Monitoring

• Track team output and motivate workers to meet daily and weekly targets.

• Identify under performance and suggest corrective action or support where needed

• Implements the Company Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Management Policy in the Section

Knowledge & Skills Required

• Excellent technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a strong sense of integrity and professionalism. 

• High level of computer literacy; Excel, Word and Power Point 

• Strong leadership capabilities, with proven experience in supervising diverse teams. 

• Effective time management and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks under pressure. 

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage across all levels. 

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments. 

• Accurate and systematic record keeping with attention to detail.

Work Environment

• Based primarily in the Harvesting & Haulage Fields, with periodic other site visits as needed.

• Exposure to Sugar Cane and Haulage machinery.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

• Full Grade 12 School Certificate.

• Diploma (preferably) or technical qualification in Crop Science or General Agriculture

• Minimum of 2 years’ relevant harvesting & haulage experience, preferably within an agricultural or similar operational environment (an added advantage).

• Strong technical knowledge in Crop science, harvesting, haulage and management skills.
