About the Role: Environmental Officer (EMS)

Reporting directly to the Environmental Coordinator, the Environmental Officer will ensure operational excellence through the responsible management of environmental programs aligned with Barrick’s standards. You will maintain and support the implementation of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS), monitor compliance, and manage site-wide initiatives including climate change strategy, environmental data reporting, and regulatory adherence.

Key Responsibilities for Environmental Officer Jobs in Kalumbila

  • Maintain and support a certified ISO 14001 EMS across mining operations and contractor activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Barrick Environmental Standards, including incident reporting and investigations.
  • Analyze, interpret, and report environmental monitoring data using approved management systems.
  • Promptly report and track environmental incidents, non-conformances, and observations.
  • Coordinate daily collection and validation of meteorological and environmental data.
  • Conduct routine environmental inspections to identify risks and verify compliance.
  • Prepare and submit accurate environmental reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform internal audits in line with ISO 14001:2015 standards for both operations and contractors.
  • Maintain thorough environmental documentation demonstrating compliance with legal and permit requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits, inspections, and continuous improvement of EMS.
  • Promote sustainable environmental practices and foster a proactive safety culture across all operational areas.

Candidate Requirements

  • Full Grade 12 Certificate and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Chemistry, or related fields.
  • Minimum of two years post-qualification experience in environmental management, preferably within mining or heavy industry.
  • Proven knowledge and practical application of Environmental Management Systems, specifically ISO 14001 standards.
  • Sound understanding of Zambian environmental legislation and mining regulations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to engage stakeholders across all levels.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and lead environmental initiatives in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and environmental data management systems is advantageous.
