Key Responsibilities for Environmental Health and Safety Controller Jobs in Kitwe

  • Drive the implementation of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards aligned with ISO 45001, 14001, 39001, Global G.A.P, and IFC performance standards.
  • Design, develop, and enforce measures to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and Good International Industry Practice (GIIP).
  • Proactively identify, assess, and manage workplace risks to foster a safe working environment and prevent injuries.
  • Liaise effectively with Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), local authorities, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Prepare timely EHS permits and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) applications.
  • Identify and promote technologies that enhance energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction.
  • Participate in the development and auditing of the company’s EHS management program to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Manage EHS data collection and contribute to sustainability tracking and reporting efforts.
  • Coordinate technical training to enhance management and employee competency on EHS operational procedures and sustainability initiatives.
  • Ensure the company meets its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduction targets.
  • Foster strong interdepartmental relationships to support EHS objectives.
  • Monitor sustainability indicators such as energy use, emissions, waste management, water, and agricultural practices.
  • Communicate progress on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies through qualitative and quantitative reporting.
  • Develop and implement EHS strategies to improve ESG performance and mitigate risks.
  • Enhance integration of EHS considerations within overall business and communication strategies.
  • Lead cross-sector programs and policies to promote environmental, health, safety, and social performance improvements.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • Over five years of practical post-qualification experience in environmental roles.
  • At least five years of operational experience across various functions; direct operational experience is advantageous.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body such as the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) or Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Association (ZOHSA).
