About the Role: System Protection Engineer Jobs in Kitwe & Chingola
As an Engineer – System Protection at CEC, you will be responsible for the design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control equipment. This includes protection schemes, monitoring devices, alarm systems, and related instruments essential to the safe and efficient operation of the power system. Reporting directly to the Senior Engineer – Protection, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of the power network.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, install, and commission protection and control schemes to optimise power system performance.
- Develop specifications for capital projects related to system protection.
- Adjudicate tenders, oversee factory acceptance tests, and supervise installation and commissioning activities for turnkey and CEC-initiated projects.
- Plan and implement maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability.
- Lead rapid fault investigations and coordinate prompt restoration of services to minimise downtime.
- Conduct engineering studies to verify the correct operation and grading of protective devices, safeguarding primary plant equipment and personnel.
- Calculate and set protection relay parameters accurately.
- Implement modifications to protection systems to accommodate new technologies and operational requirements, ensuring all documentation is updated accordingly.
- Investigate system failures and recommend corrective and preventive actions to avoid recurrence.
- Manage company resources responsibly to prevent misuse.
- Provide in-house training to enhance departmental expertise in test equipment and modern technology applications.
- Monitor and control labour and operating budgets within prescribed limits.
- Adhere strictly to company Health, Safety, Environment, and Security (HSES) policies and comply with all relevant regulations.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
- Membership with the Engineers Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
- Minimum of three years relevant experience in power systems engineering.
- Strong understanding of power systems and engineering drawings.
- Proficient computing skills and effective oral and written communication abilities.
- Familiarity with IEC61850 protocol and its engineering applications is highly desirable.
