1. Organizational Background

The Bible Society of Zambia (BSZ) is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian organization dedicated to the translation, publication, and distribution of the Holy Scriptures in accessible languages and formats for the people of Zambia. As a member of the United Bible Societies global fellowship, our core mission is to make the Word of God available to every person, transforming lives through its message of hope and salvation.

To ensure the sustainability and growth of this vital mission, BSZ operates a portfolio of commercial ventures. The revenue generated from these businesses is strategically reinvested to fund Bible translation, literacy programs, and outreach projects, ensuring the Society’s financial self-reliance and long-term impact.

2. Position Overview

The Business Development Officer is a pivotal leadership role designed to drive the commercial sustainability of the Bible Society of Zambia. This individual will be responsible for strategically managing and expanding the Society’s diverse portfolio of income-generating entities.

The ideal candidate will be a spiritually mature, results-driven Christian professional with a proven track record in business development, investment management, and revenue generation. They will blend sharp business acumen with a deep commitment to furthering the Kingdom of God through the mission of the BSZ.

3. Key Responsibilities and Duties
Strategic Business Leadership

Develop and implement a comprehensive business strategy aligned with the BSZ’s Investment Policy and overall mission.

Provide strategic oversight and management of all existing commercial ventures, including but not limited to rental properties, Bible shops, and any other business interests.

Conduct regular performance reviews of all business units, analyzing financial data to ensure profitability and ROI.

Business Development & Expansion

Proactively scout, evaluate, and recommend new business opportunities and investment channels to diversify and grow the Society’s revenue streams.

In liaison with assigned officers, lead the expansion of the current Bible shop network/or retail model into new geographical areas within Zambia.

Develop and execute growth strategies for existing assets, including the expansion and optimization of the rental property portfolio, among others.

Financial Resource Mobilization

Identify and secure funding, loans, or investment capital required for business expansion and new ventures.

Prepare compelling business cases, proposals, and financial models to present to potential investors or financial institutions.

Operational Management

Oversee the day-to-day operations of all business units, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high-quality service.

Manage relevant contracts, leases, and vendor relationships.

4. Qualifications and Experience

Personal Faith: A committed and proven Christian, actively involved in a local church, whose faith informs their professional conduct and aligns with the mission and values of the Bible Society.

Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Commerce, or a related field from a recognized institution. A Master’s degree (e.g., MBA) will be a distinct advantage.

Professional Affiliation: Must be a registered and affiliated member of a relevant professional governing body (e.g., ZICA, ACCA, CIMA, EIZ).

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of proven and progressive experience in business management, investment analysis, business development, or a similar commercial leadership role, with a demonstrable track record of driving profitability and growth.

5. Competencies and Skills

Proven ability to develop business plans, financial models, and investment proposals.

Strong negotiation and investor relations skills.

Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.

High level of integrity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Proficiency in standard business and accounting software.
