Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities

Electrical Diagnostics and Repairs

Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic faults using diagnostic tools, testing equipment, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
Repair, replace, and install electrical components, including but not limited to:
o Alternators, starters, and battery systems
o Wiring looms, sensors, relays, switches, and control units
o Lighting systems, indicators, instrumentation, and dashboards
o Electronic control systems such as ECUs, control modules, and CAN bus systems (where applicable)
Perform electrical repairs and troubleshooting on light vehicles, trucks, tractors, and other mobile or plant equipment.
Verify correct operation of systems following repairs or replacements.

Conduct routine electrical inspections as part of scheduled vehicle and equipment maintenance programmes.
Identify potential electrical failures and implement corrective actions to prevent equipment breakdowns.
Test, adjust, and calibrate electrical and electronic systems to ensure optimal functionality and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
Contribute to reducing unplanned downtime through proactive/preventative maintenance interventions.

Installation and Modification

Install new electrical systems, accessories, and equipment according to approved specifications and standards (e.g. radios, tracking systems, cameras, alarms, communication systems, auxiliary lighting).
Modify and upgrade existing wiring and electrical systems to meet operational, customer, or regulatory requirements.
Ensure all installations comply with manufacturer guidelines, statutory requirements, and company standards.
Conduct post-installation testing to confirm safety and performance.

Comply with all company SHEQ policies, electrical safety standards, and statutory regulations.
Perform electrical work safely by isolating circuits, systems, or equipment when required.
Maintain a clean, orderly, and hazard-free work area at all times.
Report unsafe conditions, defective equipment, incidents, or near misses promptly to the Workshop Foreman or Supervisor.

Documentation and Reporting

Accurately complete job cards, fault-finding reports, inspection checklists, and maintenance records.
Record parts used, repairs conducted, test results, and follow-up requirements.
Provide clear technical feedback and recommendations to the Workshop Foreman, Maintenance Supervisor, or Engineering Management.
Support maintenance history tracking and audit requirements.

Collaboration and Support

Work closely with mechanics, fitters, and other technical personnel to diagnose and resolve complex or recurring faults.
Assist with breakdown support during operational, after-hours, or peak production periods as required.
Provide guidance, technical support, and coaching to apprentices or junior staff when requested.
Support workshop objectives related to safety, quality, productivity, and continuousimprovement.

Job Advert Summary The Auto Electrician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, installing, and maintaining electrical and electronic systems on vehicles and mobile equipment to ensure their safe, reliable, and efficient operation. The role contributes to operational continuity by minimising vehicle and equipment downtime through accurate fault finding, effective preventative maintenance, and strict adherence to safety, quality, and compliance standards.
Minimum Requirements Qualifications

Qualified Auto Electrician trade certification
Valid driver’s licence (advantageous, role dependent)

Experience

Minimum of 3–5 years’ relevant experience in an automotive, fleet, or plant maintenance environment
Experience working on light vehicles, trucks, Loaders, Tractors, Trailers or mobile equipment

Knowledge and Skills

Strong electrical and electronic fault-finding skills
Knowledge of automotive electrical systems, ECUs, and diagnostic equipment
Ability to interpret wiring diagrams and technical manuals
Understanding of preventative maintenance principles
Basic computer literacy for job cards, maintenance systems, and reporting
Good troubleshooting, planning, and time management skills
