The Zambia University-College of Technology (ZUT) is a Government-owned higher learning institution established by Statutory Instrument No. 39 of 2022. Position: Software Engineer – Smart Center (ICE) Department (2 Positions)

Salary Grade: ZUT6 Salary Grade
Contract Type: Permanent Contract
Location: Ndola, Zambia

Job Purpose

Responsible for creating and maintaining in-house software; and helping to develop critical software products for our clients, including performing systems analysis on new or proposed software, and performing level 2 & 3 technical support to the Service Desk.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and implement new software programs.
2. Maintain and improve the performance of existing software.
3. Test and maintain software products to ensure strong functionality and optimization.
4. Design and update software databases.
5. Recommend improvements to existing software programs as necessary.
6. Deploy software tools, processes, and metrics.
7. Develop quality assurance procedures.
8. Research, design, implement, and manage software programs.
9. Work closely with other developers, technical support colleagues, business and systems analysts.
10. Clearly and regularly communicate with supervisors.
11. Train users on new and existing software systems.
12. Perform all other duties as required by superiors.
13. Provide level 2 & 3 technical support to the Service Desk.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required

1. Full Grade 12 Certificate with at least 5 credits or better including English and Mathematics.
2. Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
3. At least one (1) year experience in a programming environment.
4. Membership with the Information and Communication Technologies Association of Zambia (ICTAZ).

Special Aptitudes, Disposition and Personal Qualities

• Knowledge and keen interest in computer systems and emerging technologies.
• Must be able to transition into a full-stack developer with core competencies in Linux, Database design, manipulation, and query, back-end technologies (Java, C#, C++) and front-end design (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL).
• Working knowledge of the Laravel Framework.
• Good written and communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex procedures to colleagues in a clear and simple way.
• Innovative and entrepreneurial, with good commercial and business awareness.
• An analytical mind with attention to detail and desire to probe further into data.
• A team player who is reliable, adaptable, flexible, and driven by enthusiasm, with the ability to maintain calm under pressure.
