Poultry Farm Manager (Layer Farm)

Job description

Vwila farms a well-established and progressive commercial poultry Farm operating in Zambia’s Shimabala Area Kafue district is seeking to appoint a Poultry Farm Manager (Layer Farm)

REPORTS TO: Farm Owner / Director

LOCATION: Poultry Farm Site – Kafue

NATURE OF EMPLOYMENT: Contract

JOB PURPOSE

To oversee the day-to-day operations of the poultry farm, ensuring the healthy rearing of day-old chicks into productive laying hens, maximizing egg production, maintaining high biosecurity standards, managing farm staff, controlling costs, and ensuring the farm operates efficiently and profitably

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Manage the reception, brooding and the entire rearing process of day-old chicks up to production stage, ensuring smooth transition of pullets into the laying phase
2. Supervise/Oversee Vaccination, treatment and Medication schedules
3. Supervise daily poultry farm operations, including feeding, watering and monitoring Flock health and identify disease outbreaks early
4. Record production data such as feed consumption, egg output, egg quality and mortality, taking corrective measure where adverse trends are noticed.
5. Implement strategies to maximise productivity and efficiency
6. Monitor feed consumption and feed conversion efficiency.
7. Prepare weekly and monthly farm performance reports.
8. Maintain proper biosecurity and hygiene standards within the Poultry houses and around the farm.
9. Monitor environment conditions (Temperature, ventilation, lighting
10. Supervise farmworkers and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures
11. Monitor farm operating costs.
12. Ensure compliance with all agricultural, environmental, and food safety regulations.
13. Ensure proper record keeping

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

1. Full grade 12 certificate
2. Diploma or Degree in Animal Science, Poultry Production, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, or related field
3. Minimum 5-10 years’ experience managing a commercial poultry farm.
4. Experience in layer management and egg production preferred.
5. Knowledge of poultry health management and biosecurity systems.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIS)

The Farm Manager will be evaluated based on:

1. Egg production per bird.
2. Mortality rate.
3. Feed conversion efficiency.
4. Egg quality standards.
5. Disease prevention and flock health.
6. Cost control and profitability.
7. Staff productivity and performance.
8. Accuracy of farm records and reporting.
9. Compliance with biosecurity and safety standards

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

1. Strong leadership and people management skills.
2. Excellent organizational and planning abilities.
3. Knowledge of poultry nutrition and flock management.
4. Financial and cost-control skills.
5. Record-keeping and reporting skills.
6. Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
7. Ability to work under pressure and meet production targets.
8. Computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Word, and farm management systems).
