About the Role: Plant Operator Position in Kafue National Park
Reporting directly to the Roads Manager, the Plant Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery, including front-end loaders and motor graders. This fixed-term contract position spans six months and supports essential road maintenance, site preparation, and other operational activities within the park.
African Parks, a respected non-profit conservation organization managing 24 protected areas across 13 African countries, including Zambia, partners with Greater Kafue Landscape Limited on this initiative. The role demands strict adherence to safety and environmental protocols, ensuring sustainable park management.
Key Responsibilities for Plant Operator Jobs in Kafue National Park
- Operate front-end loaders and motor graders with precision and safety.
- Perform road grading, maintenance, and site development tasks.
- Load, transport, and distribute materials as required by operational needs.
- Conduct thorough daily inspections of equipment before and after use.
- Execute basic maintenance tasks and promptly report any mechanical faults.
- Maintain detailed logbooks tracking fuel consumption and operating hours.
- Comply with African Parks’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Report hazards, incidents, and equipment breakdowns promptly to supervisors.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Roads Manager or Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent.
- Valid Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate.
- Possession of a valid driver’s licence is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience operating front-end loaders and motor graders.
- Experience in construction, mining, landfill operations, or protected area management is advantageous.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient in operating heavy machinery with a strong focus on safety.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to perform routine equipment checks.
- Understanding of grading and material handling techniques.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Capability to work effectively in challenging outdoor environments.
Working Environment
- Outdoor work subject to varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to dust, noise, and physically demanding tasks.
- May require working on weekends and public holidays.
