Key Responsibilities of the Environmental Officer

  • Maintain and support the company’s ISO 14001 certified environmental management system.
  • Ensure compliance with Nkana’s mining standards, including incident reporting, investigations, and adherence to the EMS manual.
  • Prepare Environmental Project Brief (EPB) reports accurately and timely.
  • Analyse, interpret, and report environmental monitoring data using approved platforms and systems.
  • Track and report environmental incidents, non-conformances, and observations effectively.
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify environmental risks and ensure legal compliance.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance environmental performance.
  • Maintain accurate environmental documentation and compliance with permits and obligations.
  • Promote sustainable environmental awareness among employees and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Full Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Membership with the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ).
  • Minimum of five years’ relevant experience in the mining industry.
  • Strong understanding of Environmental Management Systems, especially ISO 14001 and ZEMA compliance.

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent management and leadership skills, including motivation, goal setting, and decision making.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to identify trends and plan long-term environmental initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with environmental management systems is advantageous.
