Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager or Fleet Manager, the Yard Supervisor will oversee daily yard activities to guarantee smooth movement of vehicles, drivers, cargo, and equipment. The role demands strict enforcement of safety, security, and operational discipline to minimize delays, accidents, losses, and non-compliance.

Key Responsibilities for Yard Supervisor Jobs in Ndola

• Yard Operations Management: Supervise vehicle entry, parking, dispatch, and exit; allocate parking bays for trucks, tankers, trailers, and abnormal loads; coordinate with dispatch, drivers, workshop, and security; monitor turnaround times to reduce congestion; maintain yard cleanliness and order.
• Vehicle & Fleet Control: Verify vehicle roadworthiness before dispatch, ensuring compliance with RTSA regulations and company safety standards; oversee trailer coupling/uncoupling; report defects promptly; maintain accurate vehicle movement records.
• Driver Supervision & Discipline: Enforce company disciplinary codes within the yard; ensure compliance with yard rules, speed limits, PPE usage, and safety procedures; conduct pre-dispatch briefings; manage driver rest areas and fatigue compliance; report misconduct or unsafe behavior.
• Safety, Health & Environment (SHE): Enforce yard safety protocols and signage; ensure compliance with ISO 39001 and ISO 45001 standards; investigate and report incidents or near-misses; maintain fire-fighting equipment and PPE; conduct safety inspections and toolbox talks.
• Security & Loss Prevention: Collaborate with security personnel to control yard access; verify driver identity and cargo documentation; prevent theft, vandalism, and unauthorized movements; ensure proper sealing of cargo and tankers; monitor visitor and contractor movements.
• Documentation & Reporting: Maintain daily yard activity logs; record vehicle dispatch and arrival times; compile reports on incidents and non-compliance; submit operational reports to management; support audits including RTSA, insurance, and ISO.
• Coordination & Communication: Liaise with Operations, Dispatch, Workshop, HR, and Safety Officers; clearly communicate yard instructions; escalate operational challenges; support emergency response activities.

Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum Grade 12 Certificate
• Diploma or Certificate in Transport & Logistics, Fleet Management, or Safety is an advantage
• 3 to 5 years’ experience in road transport or logistics operations
• Previous experience supervising drivers or yard operations preferred

Authority and Safety Responsibilities

The Yard Supervisor is authorized to control yard movements and driver activities, with authority to stop unsafe operations or dispatches. While able to recommend disciplinary actions, the role does not include employee dismissal. The supervisor must take reasonable care for personal and others’ safety, promptly report hazards, and comply with all company safety policies and legal requirements.
