Fountain Gates Crafts and Trades School, located in Chongwe, Lusaka, Zambia, is seeking a skilled professional for heavy duty mechanic instructor jobs in Chongwe. Position Overview for Heavy Duty Mechanic Instructor Jobs in Chongwe

This fixed-term contract role is based in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province, reporting to the Head of School. The successful candidate will deliver both theoretical and practical training in heavy-duty machinery maintenance, empowering trainees with skills essential for the mining and heavy equipment sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver structured classroom training on heavy-duty equipment systems including engines, hydraulics, powertrain, steering, braking, and suspension.
  • Design and update lesson plans covering Diesel Engines, Hydraulic Systems, Powertrain & Drivetrain, Electrical/Electronic Systems, CANBUS, Diagnostics, Telematics, and Maintenance Management.
  • Translate complex technical content into practical, industry-relevant training aligned with operational needs.
  • Maintain and update training materials to incorporate equipment advancements, OEM standards, and best practices.
  • Conduct trainee assessments and maintain accurate compliance documentation.
  • Support the development of training laboratories and simulators.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory and safety standards during all training activities.
  • Guide trainees in electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical diagnostics, demonstrating diagnostic software and measurement equipment usage.
  • Supervise troubleshooting and repair of complex systems and teach telematics principles applied in OEM environments.
  • Collaborate with workplace mentors to support on-the-job learning and validate apprentice progress.
  • Participate in moderation, audits, accreditation reviews, and continuous curriculum improvement.
  • Coach and develop apprentices through workshop-based practical training and competency assessments.

Work Environment

  • Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00 (excluding public holidays).
  • Training workshops, laboratories, and occasional industrial partner sites.
  • Exposure to heavy equipment and outdoor fieldwork.
  • Requires standing and supervising trainees for extended periods.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Mining Equipment Engineering.
  • Diploma in Teaching Methodology.
  • Minimum 5 to 8 years of heavy equipment maintenance experience.
  • At least 2 years of instructional experience.

Required Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of heavy-duty equipment systems.
  • Strong instructional and facilitation skills.
  • Coaching, mentorship, and competency evaluation expertise.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Experience with virtual training platforms such as Teams or Zoom.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Preferred Certifications

  • TEVETA Instructor Accreditation.
  • Train-the-Trainer Certification.
  • Occupational Health & Safety Certification.
  • Assessor Certification.
