Mechanical Engineer Role Overview

The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in supporting the smooth operation and maintenance of the biscuit production plant. This full-time position involves hands-on involvement in production support, troubleshooting mechanical breakdowns, and assisting with engineering activities. The successful candidate will coordinate closely with the Head of Engineering and shift teams to drive operational efficiency and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities for Mechanical Engineer Jobs in Lusaka

  • Implement maintenance techniques aligned with OEM guidelines to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns and coordinate repair activities.
  • Manage team tasks and foster collaboration within the engineering unit.
  • Analyze recurring machine failures by collecting and studying breakdown data, proposing effective solutions.
  • Maintain clear communication with reporting teams and management regarding operational challenges.
  • Guide team members on plant equipment changes and best practices.
  • Control inventory issuance and report potential shortages to the Head of Department.
  • Compile detailed shift reports on machine performance and failures for shift managers.
  • Develop CAD layouts for plant relocations, modifications, and new projects using AUTOCAD.
  • Provide technical advice on plant bottlenecks and assist in skill development of reporting staff.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure flawless project execution.
  • Assign manpower based on individual strengths to maximize maintenance efficiency.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the execution team.
  • Ensure permanent solutions replace temporary fixtures following plant evaluations.
  • Oversee the quality control of store spares, including procured, fabricated, overhauled, and revamped parts.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term maintenance plans in coordination with production leads.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • 1 to 2 years of practical experience in mechanical engineering roles.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical operations and installation processes.
  • Experience with project management at production sites.
  • Familiarity with biscuit plant operations and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Proven leadership abilities and effective team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Knowledge of FMCG industry bylaws and production processes.
  • Capability to manage resources and resolve conflicts smoothly in challenging environments.
