A waiter or waitress (server) is the primary point of contact between guests and the kitchen, responsible for creating a positive dining experience. Key duties include greeting customers, taking accurate food and drink orders, delivering orders promptly, maintaining table cleanliness, managing payments, and providing menu recommendations.
Core Responsibilities and Duties
- Customer Service: Welcoming guests, presenting menus, answering questions about ingredients or preparation, and handling special requests or complaints.
- Order Management: Taking food and beverage orders accurately, often using a Point of Sale (POS) system, and communicating them to the kitchen and bar staff.
- Service Delivery: Serving food and beverages in a timely, professional manner.
- Table Maintenance: Clearing, cleaning, and resetting tables throughout the shift.
- Financial Transactions: Preparing checks, handling cash, and processing credit card payments.
- Upselling: Promoting specials, appetizers, beverages, and desserts to increase sales.
- Safety & Hygiene: Following all food safety and sanitation regulations.
Required Skills
- Communication: Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact with guests and team members.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand and walk for long periods and carry heavy trays.
- Multitasking: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tables simultaneously under pressure.
- Attention to Detail: Ensuring orders are correct and tables are properly set.
- Product Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of the menu, including allergens and dietary options.
- Flexibility: Availability to work shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Qualifications
- G12 certificate
- Certificate or better in relevant hospitality training
- 1 to 3 years experience
