HERPEZ is seeking a dedicated Research Associate to join our team at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. About the Research Associate Role at HERPEZ

As a Research Associate, you will independently conduct and support sophisticated laboratory research activities focused on molecular biology techniques, including PCR, whole genome sequencing, and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). You will play a key role in sample processing, data analysis, and the preparation of scientific reports, working closely under the guidance of the Scientific Coordinator and Principal Investigator.

Key Responsibilities for Research Associate Jobs in Lusaka

  • Perform advanced laboratory procedures such as real-time and conventional PCR, whole genome sequencing, and metagenomic sequencing workflows.
  • Lead sample processing steps including nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, sequencing, and quality control.
  • Analyze and interpret laboratory and sequencing data using bioinformatics tools where applicable.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of research protocols and experimental workflows.
  • Prepare technical and scientific reports, and assist with manuscript writing and presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), biosafety, and quality assurance standards.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and sequencing platforms.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, including procurement of reagents and consumables.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff and students within the laboratory.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, data management, and record keeping for all research activities.
  • Report technical issues, quality concerns, and deviations promptly to supervisors.
  • Engage in collaborative research efforts within HERPEZ and with external partners.
  • Adhere to all institutional policies and safety regulations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related field. A Master’s degree is an advantage.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in laboratory or research settings.
  • Proven expertise in molecular laboratory techniques including PCR.
  • Experience with whole genome sequencing and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement research projects and report data effectively.
  • Capability to work independently and supervise junior team members.
