Position Overview for Chief Engineer Geotechnical Jobs in Kalumbila

The Chief Rock Engineer will be responsible for leading the Rock Engineering Department, overseeing all aspects of ground control and geotechnical strategies. This role is integral to ensuring operational safety, compliance with regulations, and optimizing mine design and extraction processes. You will provide expert guidance on mine planning, risk management, and the long-term geotechnical stability of the Trident mine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of rock engineers and technicians; develop and implement sustainable ground control strategies aligned with production and safety targets; maintain strong relationships with mining operations, consultants, and contractors.
  • Geotechnical Risk Management: Identify and assess geotechnical hazards; design and monitor ground support systems; conduct regular risk assessments and audits.
  • Technical Oversight: Provide expert advice on stope layouts, excavation stability, and seismicity; ensure geotechnical designs meet safety and legal standards; interpret geotechnical data to support mine planning.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Oversee installation and analysis of geotechnical instrumentation; prepare technical reports and ground control plans; present findings to mine leadership.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to local mining and occupational health and safety legislation; liaise with regulatory bodies; uphold international best practices.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Implement new technologies to improve geotechnical performance; foster a culture of safety and continuous learning.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BSc, BEng, or BTech in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • MSc or MEng in Geotechnical, Rock, or Geological Engineering is advantageous.
  • Chamber of Mines Rock Engineering Certificate (mandatory).
  • Registration with a recognized professional body (e.g., ECSA for South Africa).
  • Blasting License is advantageous.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of rock engineering experience, including at least 3 years in a senior or leadership role.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering within an open-pit mining environment.
  • Proficiency with geotechnical software such as Rocscience Suite, FLAC, Phase2, and RS3.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office and Pronto.
  • Experience with automated systems and technologies (Numerical Modelling Packages, RADAR software, Sirovision).
