Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Solar Electrical Engineer to join our technical team. The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded professional capable of handling all types of solar projects, including on-grid, off-grid, and hybrid systems with battery energy storage. This role requires expertise in the full project lifecycle, from initial design and system sizing to commissioning and post-installation support. The engineer will be a key player in ensuring our projects are technically sound, safe, and exceed client expectations while adhering to all Zambian standards and regulations
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering:
Lead the electrical design of solar PV systems of all scales, including on-grid, off-grid, and hybrid systems.
Perform detailed system sizing and component selection (solar panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, BOS) based on project requirements, energy needs, and site conditions.
Conduct energy yield simulations and shading analysis using industry-standard software (PVsyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD).
Develop comprehensive electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and bill of materials (BOMs) that comply with relevant national and international standards (BS, NEC, IEC).
Ensure all designs and installations strictly adhere to Zambian electrical codes and regulations.
Project Management & Execution:
Collaborate with project managers and site teams to ensure the design is implemented correctly and efficiently.
Oversee the technical aspects of installation, ensuring adherence to design specifications and safety protocols.
Provide technical guidance and support to field crews during installation and troubleshooting.
Commissioning & Testing:
Develop and execute commissioning plans and test procedures.
Perform comprehensive system testing, including I-V curve tracing, insulation resistance tests (Megger testing), and performance analysis, to ensure optimal system functionality.
Prepare and finalize project documentation, including as-built drawings and commissioning reports.
Technical Sales & Support:
Work with the sales team to provide technical input for proposals and presentations.
Act as a subject matter expert for client consultations, addressing technical inquiries and providing solutions.
Provide post-installation technical support and troubleshooting for any system issues.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
5 to 10 years of hands-on experience in the design, installation, and commissioning of solar PV projects.
Proven expertise in on-grid, off-grid, and hybrid solar systems.
Proficiency in solar design software (PVsyst, Helioscope) and AutoCAD.
Strong knowledge of Zambian electrical standards, including ZS 418 (Electrical Safety Code), ZS 791 (Wiring of Premises), and the Zambian Grid Code.
Strong knowledge of international electrical codes, standards, and regulations (BS, NEC, IEC).
Experience with a variety of solar components, including inverters, solar panels, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong attention to detail.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Professional registration with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) is a significant advantage.
