Job Purpose

The Head of Credit will oversee the Bank’s lending process, assess creditworthiness, and minimize risk exposure. Be responsible for leading the quality and profitability of the loan portfolio; establishing and developing Credit, collection, and fraud policies and objectives to manage risk within the company’s acceptable risk ranges for commercial, consumer and credit card lending; developing risk management and scorecard analytics; ensuring compliance with state and central bank regulatory guidelines; acting as the principal spokesperson for the lending function; and managing the loan approval process.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

Develop revised workplace technology approach for productivity improvement and innovation
Develop and enforce company credit policies and guidelines.
Direct analysis performed and credit policies that target profitable buyer segments
Monitor accounts to ensure timely payments and manage overdue collections.
Evaluate client credit history and financial statements to determine creditworthiness.
Collaborate with sales and finance teams to set credit limits and payment terms.
Drive continuous improvement of internal credit guidelines and policies taking into consideration changing market and/or industry outlook
Drive corporate governance measures
Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory credit standards.
Drive credit stress testing outcomes to chart business decisions and credit risk appetites
Drive identification of credit opportunities where businesses can handle more risks
Endorse credit applications that deviate from approved limits or are at top threshold levels
Endorse dashboard indicators that facilitate monitoring of credit exposure levels
Establish policies and procedures for credit applications that deviate from predetermined standards
Lead department’s financial budgeting process to acquire funds for the operational activities
Lead negotiations with relevant stakeholders regarding repossession actions from buyers with delinquent accounts
Lead periodic credit reviews and actions taken to ensure exposure to non-performing accounts are managed
Lead technology application to improve productivity and innovation
Oversee department’s financial budget utilisation against department work plan
Analyze market trends and economic factors affecting credit risk.

Primary Areas of Accountability:

Qualification and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business
Masters Degree or MBA in Finance would be an added advantage.
A minimum of at least 7+ years of experience in credit underwriting/analysis, credit evaluation and control in a Banking environment
Must have a minimum of 3 years experience at senior management/department Head level
Proven experience in credit analysis, financial risk management, and customer relationship handling
Experience in dealing with Senior/Executive Management
Good knowledge of Bank of Zambia guidelines and other relevant Credit related Regulations
Experience of presenting to and communicating with senior management and the Board
Must be a member of the Zambia Institute of Banking and Financial Services
