Occupational Health and Safety Institute (OHSI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security established under the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 36 of 2010, has its main Offices situated in Kitwe with two branch offices in Solwezi and Lusaka. In addition to the 3 centres, the Institute also offers occupational health and safety (OHS) services to all the sectors throughout the country on outreach basis. The Institute is looking for suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the following positions;

1. REGIONAL MANAGER (1 POSITION- LUSAKA OFFICE)

 

JOB OBJECTIVE

To co-ordinate the provision of Occupational Health and Safety Institute services in line with the 2022-2026 strategic plan and periodically monitor, evaluate and optimize operational performance in order to contribute to the promotion of a healthy working environment and a productive workforce.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Undertakes and coordinates timely and effectively clinical examination of clients in order to determine their health status.
Ensures timely and accurate preparation of reports in Occupational Medicine for decision making.
Formulates and disseminates educational materials for awareness programs on Occupational Health and Safety
Participates effectively and timely in the formulation and implementation of occupational health and safety standards in order to ensure adherence to national and international standards
Conducts and participates in Occupational Health and Safety research in order to generate information to inform OHS policies and standards.
Undertakes teaching and training in OHS of students in order to impart knowledge and skills.
Overseeing daily operations of the office, evaluating and monitoring the operational performance in line with the annual work plan.
Supervises effectively utilization of human and other resources at the regional office in order to attain set objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Full Form 5 or Grade 12 school certificate or equivalent MB ChB or its equivalent
Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Medicine or Occupational Health and Safety or Public Health- Occupational Health or equivalent
5 years post qualification experience
Registered member of the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ)
Capable of writing comprehensive and analytical reports
Able to communicate fluently in English
Interpersonal, Leadership skills and Computer Literate
Integrity, Confidentiality and Sober habits
Able to perform efficiently in a high-pressure environment
Should be able to demonstrate excellent problem- solving and decision-making skills
2. EPIDEMIOLOGIST [1 POSITION]

 

JOB OBJECTIVE

To collect and analyze Epidemiological OHS data in order to investigate health issues related to employees in all work places for decision making.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collect and analyse OHS data to ensure timely preparation and submission of OHS Epidemiological Surveillance Reports in order to facilitate decision making.
Coordinates and undertakes timely. occupational epidemiological research to inform OHS policies, standards and risk management activities
Develops and reviews timely Epidemiological Surveillance Systems in order to enhance data collection and analysis.
Undertakes fitness for work assessment of employees at the station and outreach as well as surveillance of employee’s health.
Undertakes teaching and training in OHS of students in order to impart knowledge and skills
Coordinates and undertakes regularly public occupational health programmes in order to enhance OHS awareness.
Coordinates effectively the development of work plans in order to facilitate monitoring and evaluation of performance of the Unit and individuals.
Supervises effectively utilization of human and other resources in the department in order to attain set objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent
Minimum Vocational/Professional Qualifications: MBChB or equivalent, MSc in Epidemiology or MPH (Epidemiology/Biostatistics
Qualification in OHS will be an added advantage
Minimum Relevant Pre-Job Experience: 5 years working experience in the similar field
Registered Member of the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ)
Valid Practicing License
Computer literate with knowledge of statistical- analytical software like Epi-Info, STATA, SPSS
Able to write comprehensive and analytical reports

3. BIOSTATISTICIAN [1 POSITION]

 

JOB OBJECTIVE

Responsible for analyzing and interpreting data using statistical methods to provide insights that help improve organizational processes, decision-making, overall performance and well-being of employees. This role combines analytical expertise, processes and statistics.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Address discrepancies between expected and actual data to maintain organizational integrity.
Analyzing data and interpreting the results of employees using statistical methods to inform OHS policies and interventions.
Ensure compliance with regulations and policies by monitoring changes in data or practices.
Develop training materials for employees on data analysis and decision-making and participate in OHS awareness programmes
Work with Heads of Departments and Regional Managers to update records and ensure all processes are aligned with organizational goals
Developing research designs for OHS studies and participate in data collection and analysis
Collaborate with IT to maintain the integrity of OHS data
Participate in conduction of epidemiological
investigations to identify the causes and contributing factors of occupational injuries and diseases

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12 school certificate
Bachelor’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics or related field.
Computer literate with knowledge of statistical- analytical software like Epe-Info, STATA, SPSS
Minimum Relevant Pre-Jab Experience: 4 years working experience in the similar field
Registered Member of the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ)
Valid Practicing License
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data analysis knowledge of database management and data visualization tools
Collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn from others
Collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn from others
Ability to communicate complex data insights clearly to non-expert stakeholders
Qualification in OHS will be an added advantage
4. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSE [1 POSITION]

 

JOB OBJECTIVE

To promote and maintain the health and safety and overall well- being of workers in a workplace by identifying health risks, preventing illness or injury, and ensuring that the workplace meets health and safety regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct health screening of clients and workers to ascertain their health status
Undertake timely and accurately recording of vital signs and preparation of reports in order to facilitate decision making
Identify potential hazards and health risks and advises on the control measures to prevent ill-health
Implement preventive strategies such as wellness programmes, health education and regular counselling of clients and workers on health and safety related matters
Administer timely and correctly, first aid care in order to relieve pain
Undertake timely updating of Registers in order to enhance record keeping.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12 School Certificate or relevant qualification
Minimum Vocation/Professional Qualifications: Diploma in Nursing or equivalent
Qualifications in Occupational Health field is an added advantage.
Minimum Relevant Pre-Job Experience: 5 Years
Registered Member of the General Nursing Council of Zambia
Valid Practicing License
Good communication Skills
Able to write technical reports

5. RECORDS SUPERVISOR (1 POSITION]

 

JOB OBJECTIVE

Responsible for the daily operations records creation, inventory, retention, disposition and maintenance of records that support various functions within the Institute in order to enhance accessibility, security and flow of information of Occupational Health and Safety Institute services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates and supervises effectively distribution of correspondence in order to facilitate decision making.
Coordinates and supervises accurately indexing of employee and medical files in order to facilitate efficient and effective storage and retrieval of information.
Effective and accurate classification of employee and medical records and correspondence to facilitate efficient storage and retrieval of information
Coordinates and supervises regularly and accurately identification of records to be disposed of in order to facilitate archiving and space creation.
Coordinates effectively security of records in order to prevent unauthorized access and destruction
Ensures operational procedures are consistent with general records practices
Oversees the creation, maintenance and organization of records within an organization

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12 school certificate or equivalent.
Diploma in Records Management/Library Studies/Information System or equivalent.
Five years relevant post qualification experience.
Must be a member of Zambia Archives and Records Association.
Strong skills in word and excel of the Microsoft Office package.
Good report writing skills
Integrity, Confidentiality and Sober habits.
6. MAINTENANCE OFFICER [1 POSITION]

 

JOB OBJECTIVE

Responsible for ensuring that all Occupational Health and Safety Institute’s facilities and infrastructure are maintained in a safe, functional, and efficient condition. The role involves routine inspections, repairs, and proactive maintenance of physical assets including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct routine inspections of buildings, facilities, and infrastructure to identify and resolve issues promptly.
Respond in a timely manner to repair requests, ensuring minimal disruption to clinical and operational services
Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair work completed, including maintenance schedules and logs.
Coordinate with external service providers and contractors for specialized repairs or installations. Maintain up-to-date material stock-take, tool/equipment schedules, and planned work documentation
Oversee and, where applicable, supervise the activities of contractors and tradesperson works.
Monitor and manage inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12 school certificate
Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Building Maintenance, or related technical field.
Five years proven “hands-on” post qualification experience.
Must be a member of Engineering Institute of Zambia.
Technical proficiency in electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills with a customer service orientation.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software tools
Prior experience in maintenance or facilities management is an advantage
Good report writing skills
7. DRIVER (1 POSITION)

 

To drive institutional vehicles in order to facilitate mobility of officers, materials or/and equipment and ensure that they are in good condition at all times.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conversant with the operations mechanism of light vehicles and passenger buses, and ensuring that they are in road worthy condition, perfect state of cleanliness, insured and with valid road tax, etc., before they are used; and that they are driven on official duties only.
Ensures that passengers take safety precautions, such as wearing of safety belts before any journey begins Delivers materials and personnel to instructed destinations, ensuring safety at all times.
Reports any instance of mishap or accident to the Supervisor for timely action.
Ensures security of the vehicle at all times and that the vehicle is parked only in a secured place when not in use

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12 school certificate
PSV Drivers’ license with eligibility to drive buses.
Competence license to drive GRZ vehicles
5 years’ experience working as a driver with a reputable organization.
Excellent knowledge of traffic rules and road laws of Zambia.
Knowledge of basic mechanics.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills with a customer service orientation.
